Reviving A Forgotten Sunnah With Social Business

Let’s imagine that Rasulullah (s.a.w)  is alive today and you invited him to come to your event and despite his busy schedule he actually came to your event. The question is what would you give him as a gift? Remember this is not just any VIP, this is the messenger of Allah that change the world. The most influential leader in the world of all time, what would be the perfect gift?

This same question was asked by Bilal Stelljes an exhibitor at the Global Islamic Fintech Summit X Islamic Digital Economy 2019. The first thing that came to his mind was the Miswak. Yet the Miswak in the market currently is not packaged in a presentable manner. In Malaysia, you can buy a Miswak usually at a Tablighi gathering or at a supermarket that caters to the low-income group.

Royal Miswak’s cofounder, Bilal Stelljes, at the Islamic Digital Economy 2019 Conference

So Bilal together with his brother Abdullah Al Almani wanted to revive the Sunnah by making the Miswak a premium item that is available in high-end retailers. What Bilal is doing is not just making a business decision to generate income but he has a bigger mission. He is trying to change the perception towards this forgotten sunnah.

When asked whether he is not afraid of having his business venture deeply rooted in religion, his answer was, “What is important is you have to get your intention correct if you do something for Allah, then Allah will help you”.

More Than A Just A Twig

The Miswak is a form of a twig that Rasulullah (s.a.w) used to clean his teeth with, it is kind of like our modern-day toothbrush. It is such an important sunnah that   Allah’s Messenger (s.a.w) said, “If I had not found it hard for my followers, I would have ordered them to clean their teeth with the Miswak for every prayer”, Sahih Bukhari.

Bilal wants to revive this sunnah and make the Miswak as not something that you can only find in a supermarket that caters to the low-income group. He started a mission to make the Miswak as presentable that it would be given as a corporate gift and can share the same shelf with premium items, be showcased in premium sunnah shops, worldwide including Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

The brothers have sold approximately 30,000 units of the Royal Miswak up till now. The only problem they have is keeping up with the increasing demand.  He received his initial funding for the project from a crowdfunding platform, Launch Good.

Journey to Royal Miswak

Bilal and his brother traveled the world to look for the perfect Miswak and turned their dream of reviving the sunnah into a reality. They finally found the perfect material in Kashmir. The material is from premium olive trees planted in the valleys of Kashmir.

The material is so unique that it contains a natural aroma and dries-off almost immediately after use. But this is not enough to make it presentable. The Miswak comes with a casing that is befitting for a royalty. It must be something that you will be proud to present as a gift, or put on the table for all to see in a board meeting.

So off they went to China to make the perfect case for their chosen Miswak. After several try they finally came out with their signature black and gold tube case. Something that is stylish, luxurious, and convenient at the same time.

Adding Social Business Into The Business of Miswak

Bilal also runs a school for Rohingya refugees in Malaysia and part of the sales proceeds of Royal Miswak goes to financing the upkeep of the school. The Rohingya refugees in Malaysia do not have access to free government education due to current laws.

Hence, they depend on benevolent people like Bilal Stelljes and his brother who dedicate their time, effort and money to give the children of the Rohingya refugees in Malaysia access to free education. If you’d like to contribute to helping refugee Rohingya children receive free education, consider reviving the Sunnah with the Royal Miswak.
