A Muslim American Doctor has successfully invented a machine that can serve as a ventilator for seven people. Dr. Saud Anwar, a Pakistani American, has converted a CPAP machine into a ventilator for use up to seven people amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He came up with this idea while working at the Manchester Memorial Hospital in Connecticut, USA with his medical team.
This is especially critical in the US, which is facing the highest number of COVID-19 infections and deaths, and are in severe need of more ventilators.
Uploaded His Invention On YouTube
The good doctor has uploaded his invention on YouTube himself on 30 March 2020, which we share here.
The idea is converting a CPAP machine into a ventilator for seven people. A CPAP machine is a continuous positive airway pressure machine which applies mild air pressure to help sleep apnea patients breathe more regularly.
The concept of converting a CPAP machine into a ventilator for seven people has worked in a simulation setting. However, it has yet to be tested in a clinical trial, as the concept was only recently revealed. The team believes the concept of the CPAP machine converting into a ventilator would work if the need arise to treat mass casualties.
Shortage Of Ventilators In The US
According to New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo said, “What are we going to do with 400 ventilators when we need 30,000? You’re missing the magnitude of the problem.”
According to Dr. Anwar, “We don’t have enough ventilators; my thought is that we can expand our capacity to make our ventilators work harder and then be able to save more lives.”
“Before we get to the point of the surge, I’m hoping our state, our governor is going to make a call of a similar capacity to say it is okay go ahead and save as many people as you can…This is not the standard of care, but then the other option is to let people die, and as a physician, I can’t accept that, and I am trying to fight that.”
Surprised Parade For Honoring His Contribution
Dr. Saud Anwar’s contribution on the conversion of a CPAP machine into a ventilator for seven people has received the recognition and honor in his community. Dr. Anwar is also a US Democrat politician, as a Connecticut state senator.
