An Islamic school group in Indonesia, the Wahidiyah group, which consists of a university, numerous high schools, primary schools, and kindergartens have launched a ride-hailing (or ride-sharing app), aptly named Buroq.
The app offers customers rides on motorbikes, cars as well as provide food delivery service.
Buroq, or Burak, is the mythical horse with wings that have been described in the biography of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. as the creature which he rode to Jerusalem (Baitul Maqdis) from Makkah, and from Jerusalem to the Heavens above, where he met all previous prophets in Jannah and where he also received the commandments for the establishment of the 5 obligatory prayers.
The app was launched in September 2019 and it already has 40,000 customers, where it operates on the island of Java, Indonesia, including major cities such as Jakarta. The Buroq app is parked under the company named PT. Buroq Sakti Terbang (the company name loosely translated as The Flying Magical Buroq)
The IT faculty of the Universitas Wahidiyah also made the app fast, in which they were able to complete it within one week.
In Indonesia, the Buroq app is becoming viral with many funny tweets…
The translation of tweet on Buroq app:
Q: Did you get here on a taxi-bike?
Q: Did you ride with a friend?
A: Also no
Q: Then what?
A: I rode a Buroq (buraq)….
The founder of the Wahidiyah schools, K.H. Abdul Latif Madjid, told Salaam Gateway, that,
“I’m not seeking profits because I didn’t put in any capital when I created Buroq,”. He said that the app is to improve the economic situation of the Wahidiyah community.
The app claims to be the cheapest in town.
